ROCHESTER, N.Y.—After fleeing Afghanistan, Muhammad and his six kids landed of their new hometown on the day the capital city of Kabul fell to the Taliban. The household’s fortuitous escape marked the beginning of one other tough journey.
Muhammad had spent his first evening in America within the emergency room of a Virginia hospital, struggling to breathe. He was overcome with fear about his spouse, Aliya, who was stopped from boarding their flight from Kabul due to a visa drawback. With solely minutes to set their course, she and Muhammad agreed to separate. He would take the youngsters to the U.S. alone.
