The State Department of Education is asking South Carolina lawmakers to raise wages for all teachers by 2% next year.
Of the agency budget According to state newspapers, leaders also want to fine-tune teachers’ salaries during the first five years of service to receive the full annual living expenses given to all teachers.
A 2% salary increase for teachers will give them an additional $ 800 to $ 1,700 per year, depending on the number of years they have worked and their level of education.
The department is also seeking funding to raise the wages of school bus drivers by at least 5%.
This will raise the driver’s minimum wage from $ 8.44 per hour to at least $ 8.86. According to Ryan Braun, a spokesman for the Ministry of Education, many districts have invested additional money in their salaries, raising wages up to $ 25 per hour.
According to Brown, the school district is competing for drivers with truck companies that can pay more.
“Teacher salaries are a problem, but if you can’t get your kids to school, it really doesn’t matter,” Brown said.
The General Assembly will consider the request when it returns in January.
