Cy-Fair ISD board member faces calls to resign after comments about Black academics, dropout rates


Cy-Fair ISD board member Scott Henry talked about his “phrases are getting twisted” for political features.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A rising number of Houston-area leaders are calling for the resignation of a Cy-Fair ISD board member after he made comments suggesting that the additional Black teachers a district has, the higher the dropout charge.

The comments have been made Monday night during a work session about Cy-Fair ISD’s equity audit report.

“Cy-Fair has what? 13% black lecturers?” Scott Henry talked about. “Houston ISD is 36%. Their dropout charge is 4%. I don’t need to be 4%. I don’t need to be HISD. I need to be a shining instance. I need to be the district commonplace.”

Since Henrys remarks, political leaders, along with Harris County Choose Lina Hidalgo and State Rep. Jon Rosenthal, are calling for Henry to resign.

“Divisiveness and racism are what’s hurting our college students. Not range. Resign,” tweeted Hidalgo.

“Past unacceptable.  I’ve not personally met any of the brand new @CyFairISD Trustees, however this man’s blatant racism is trigger for speedy dismissal so far as I’m involved,” Rosenthal talked about in a tweet.

CFISD Superintendent Dr. Mark Henry — no relation to Scott Henry — talked about the district “is extra dedicated than ever to proceed to recruit educators who mirror our district’s demographics.”

In a statement Thursday, Henry talked about a varied workforce helps all faculty college students succeed.
