Giulio Regeni Murder Trial Opens in Italy With Egyptian Security Officials Absent

ROME—A trial of 4 Egyptian safety officers charged with the kidnapping, torture and killing of Italian pupil Giulio Regeni opened Thursday, the primary time Egyptian officers have been prosecuted overseas for crimes that human-rights teams say have been dedicated on a big scale within the north African nation lately.

The 4 are being tried in absentia and are represented in Italy by court-appointed attorneys.
