Indian classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj was cremated with state honours at Vile Parle’s Pawan Hans Crematorium, Mumbai, on Thursday, reported news agency PTI. The 90-year-old music doyen died of a cardiac arrest on Monday in New Jersey, USA, where he was living with his family. He was later brought back to India. The final rites of Pandit Jasraj were performed by his son Shaarang Dev Pandit, followed by a 21-gun salute at Pawan Hans Crematorium, reported PTI. The funeral took place in the presence of Pandit Jasraj’s family and members of the film industry, including singers Anup Jalota, Kailash Kher and composer Jatin Pandit, according to Pritam Sharma, the media coordinator for the family, reported PTI.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, only 25-30 people were allowed at the crematorium, reported PTI. Pandit Jasraj’s ‘antim darshan’ was held on Thursday at his Versova residence, where several members of the film fraternity such as filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, singer Shreya Ghoshal, as well as flute maestro Pandit Ronu Majumdar paid tributes to the legendary vocalist, reported PTI.
Pandit Jasraj is survived by his wife Madhura, son Shaarang and daughter Durga Jasraj, both of whom are musicians.
On the day of Pandit Jasraj’s death, Bollywood stars, as well as members of the music fraternity such as AR Rahman, Javed Akhtar, Vishal Dadlani, Adnan Sami, Randeep Hooda, Shreya Ghoshal, Madhur Bhandarkar and Shankar Mahadevan expressed grief on social media.
Pandit Jasraj’s musical career spanned eight decades. He received several prestigious awards, including the Padma Vibhushan, as well as Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
