A man was found dead in the middle of state Route 76 early Saturday after a driver who tried to avoid hitting him ended up running over the body, Oceanside police said.
It’s still unknown whether the man lying in the road was already dead when the approaching vehicle struck him, said Oceanside police spokesperson Jennifer Atenza.
Police officers received a call about 1:30 a.m. from the driver who had struck the man. Atenza said the victim had apparently gotten out of his vehicle, which was parked on the north shoulder of SR-76, and somehow ended up in the westbound lane of the highway just west of Douglas Drive.
The driver who was approaching the area saw a person lying in the roadway and tried to avoid hitting him but was unable to avoid running over him, Atenza said. When officers arrived, the man was dead. His name has not yet been released. Police said it does not appear that speed or alcohol were a factor in this collision.
Atenza said anyone with additional information should contact the police department’s accident investigator, Clint Bussey, at (760) 435-4412.
