The death toll from the collapse of a condominium in the Miami area increased to 78 on Friday. This is what the mayor called “painful” and “amazing” as recovery workers struggled to find victims in the rubble for 16 days.
An additional 62 people have not yet been explained. No one has been found alive since the first few hours after the building collapsed on June 24th.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said work to recover the victims remains urgent.
“This is a phenomenal and tragic number that has a very profound effect on all of us,” she said of the new death toll.
On Thursday, Paraguay’s Foreign Minister said radio reports contained the bodies of the country’s First Lady sisters. Several Latin American citizens were reported on the building when it collapsed. Rescue personnel focused on finding the bodies rather than the survivors promised to continue searching for the victims until all debris on the scene was removed.
A painstaking search for survivors goes to recovery efforts midnight Wednesday after authorities say they have reached a painful conclusion that “there is no chance of life” in the rubble of the Champlain Towers South Condominium Building on the surfside. I moved.
The hope of finding survivors reignited temporarily after workers demolished the rest of the building and gained access to areas of new debris. There were several cavities in the basements and parking lots, where survivors could have been trapped, but no one was found alive. Instead, the team recovered more than 12 additional casualties.
No one has been pulled alive since the first few hours after the collapse of the 12-story building on June 24th.
State and local authorities have promised financial assistance to the victims’ families and residents of buildings that survived but lost all property. Meanwhile, authorities have begun a grand jury investigation into the collapse. And at least six proceedings were filed by the family.
