Mikel Arteta has revealed his excitement after Arsenal confirmed the signing of “special talent” Fabio Vieira from Porto.

The midfielder, 22, has signed a long-term deal at the Emirates after the Gunners agreed a £34million deal with Porto. That includes £30m paid up front with another £4m in add-ons. Vieira is the club’s second signing of the summer after Brazilian forward Marquinhos.

The Portugal youth international was a key part of the side that won the Primeira Liga title last season, his second championship at Porto. He leave the Portuguese outfit with 75 senior appearances to his name and three trophies, including the Taca de Portugal.

Vieira achieved various individual honours during his time at Porto. He was named the Primeira Liga’s Midfielder of the Month in April 2022 and was declared the Player of the Tournament at the U21 Euros last summer, helping Portugal reach the final. They lost 1-0 to Germany.

As such, it’s easy to see why Arteta is eager to work with the youngster. “I am very excited that we have identified and signed such a special talent,” he told Arsenal’s website.

“Fabio is a very creative player that will bring high quality and versatility to our attacking play. We welcome Fabio and his family to our club and are looking forward to starting work with him ahead of the new season.”
