'My mum dismissed my girlfriend as a soon-to-be-ex – I didn't stand up for her'

A man claims his girlfriend slammed him as a “mummy’s boy” after his mother cruelly blasted her as “his soon-to-be ex-girlfriend” during a family dinner

Getting to know your other half’s parents is always a nerve-wracking experience, and you’d at least hope they will be kind and polite towards you.

Unfortunately, one man was in for a nightmarish family dinner after his “cold and dismissive” made her feelings towards his girlfriend crystal clear, dismissing her as a “soon-to-be ex.”

The 30-year-old man, whose name is Josh, claims he first introduced his girlfriend Hannah to his mum some 18 months ago and, sadly, they’d been right to be nervous beforehand.

The two women just didn’t “click”, and in the months since, Josh’s mother has made constant “comments and digs” about Hannah, a person he describes as being “one of the sweetest girls you will ever meet.”

Things recently came to head during a meal out at an Italian restaurant, when Josh chose not to stand up for Hannah after his mother made yet another jibe about her. Hannah is now furious and has “slammed him as a “mummy’s boy.”

Taking to Reddit, the scolded boyfriend recalled: “My mum asks to take our photo on her phone and I can see how pleased Hannah looks that she’s asked.

We smile and pose, but then once the photo is taken, my mum says, ‘lovely, a photo of Josh and his soon-to-be ex-girlfriend!’ My girlfriend’s face drops and she freezes (she doesn’t deal well with confrontation) and I can see she has started to get tears in her eyes.

“I can feel how upset she is next to me and how hard she is trying not to burst into full-on tears. My dad tells my mum she is being too harsh and that it’s not a nice thing to say, but my mum brushes it off as a joke. I don’t say anything because I don’t want to make anything worse than it is. The rest of the meal happens smoothly.”

However, according to Josh – who goes by the username u/Total-Television9207 – the confrontation was far from over, and Hannah blew up at him as soon as they got back to her house.

She may have stayed quiet during the dinner, but once behind closed doors she let Josh know the full extent of her feelings, telling him she was “sick of how rude and unaccepting her mom is of her.”

Her anger wasn’t just reserved for Josh’s mum. She was also furious with how Josh had opted not to stick up for her when she needed him, letting his mother speak down to her in such a disrespectful way.

Josh continued: “She called me a mummy’s boy. I apologised but I really don’t know how me saying anything could have made the situation better.”

On reflection, Josh now wonders whether he should have called his mother out, just as his father had tried to do. Many of his fellow Reddit users agree he definitely could have done more, and now has some serious making up to do.

One person wrote: “You say you love this woman but allow your mother to be rude and disrespect her. It’s just the way she is, is not an excuse to allow your mom to be rude.

“Unless you want to be alone for the rest of your life, you need to stand up for your girlfriend. You need to see it from her perspective if the tables were turned, would you stick around if her family treated you like dirt. Your poor girlfriend.”

Another said: “You are not keeping the peace. Nothing about being bullied and insulted by her boyfriend’s mum is peaceful for Hannah. You are just choosing your mum over your girlfriend.”
