My associate, Nicholas Bullen, who has died aged 74, was a dressing up designer and vogue and textiles trainer.
Nick joined BBC Tv as a dressing up designer in 1967, engaged on drama and leisure programmes, most notably two Physician Who tales with Patrick Troughton: The Struggle Video games and The House Pirates, each a part of the sixth season and broadcast in 1969.
After a profitable stint on the BBC, Nick spent the early Nineteen Seventies providing bespoke design to personal purchasers, together with the dance group Pan’s Folks and the singers Engelbert Humperdinck, Clodagh Rodgers, Vince Hill and Jimmy Ruffin. He designed a marriage costume for the lyricist Bernie Taupin’s spouse, Maxine.
Nick taught vogue and sample slicing at Derby, Birmingham and Kingston artwork faculties, after which, in 1976, was appointed to steer the style and textiles division at Ealing Faculty of Increased Training (now the College of West London). His programs have been modern, together with the establishing of a pupil alternate to Paris. One other of Nick’s coups was establishing his buddy the designer Invoice Gibb as an exterior examiner at Ealing.
Nick’s e book, Making Traditional Marriage ceremony Clothes, was printed on 29 July 1981, Charles and Diana’s marriage ceremony day, and was reviewed within the Sunday Occasions: “For individuals who are extra deeply moved … Nicholas Bullen has produced an ideal help”.
Born in Seven Kings, Essex (now a part of the London borough of Redbridge), Nick was the eldest of six kids of John Bullen, a BOAC airline pilot, and his spouse, Mary (nee Hellyer). Introduced up in Maidenhead, Berkshire, he attended Maidenhead grammar faculty, the place he excelled in artwork. He accomplished an artwork basis course at Berkshire Faculty of Artwork and a BA in vogue and textiles at Leicester Schools of Artwork and Expertise (now a part of De Montfort College), becoming a member of the BBC quickly after graduating.
Nick loved travelling for work: sourcing knitwear in Scotland, selecting colourways for ties at Lake Como, and presenting conventional English menswear collections in Tokyo and Hong Kong. His favorite abroad journey was a five-month non-public instructing task in 1992 in Mashhad, Iran, the place he taught garment development. He liked the nation and its folks and was struck the way it differed from its portrayal within the western press.
After retiring, Nick volunteered at Oxfam and Marie Curie charity retailers, utilizing his vogue expertise.
He was a most loyal buddy, who liked socialising. He was a terrific cook dinner and an amusing raconteur. His optimistic perception in folks introduced out the most effective in them.
Nick and I met in Paris in 1986, and shaped an instantaneous and long-lasting rapport, spending 34 years collectively. We grew to become civil companions in 2009. Nick is survived by me and his 4 siblings, Jeff, Judi, Mark and Jonathan.
