Nicholas Bullen obituary

My associate, Nicholas Bullen, who has died aged 74, was a dressing up designer and vogue and textiles trainer.

Nick joined BBC Tv as a dressing up designer in 1967, engaged on drama and leisure programmes, most notably two Physician Who tales with Patrick Troughton: The Struggle Video games and The House Pirates, each a part of the sixth season and broadcast in 1969.

After a profitable stint on the BBC, Nick spent the early Nineteen Seventies providing bespoke design to personal purchasers, together with the dance group Pan’s Folks and the singers Engelbert Humperdinck, Clodagh Rodgers, Vince Hill and Jimmy Ruffin. He designed a marriage costume for the lyricist Bernie Taupin’s spouse, Maxine.

Nick taught vogue and sample slicing at Derby, Birmingham and Kingston artwork faculties, after which, in 1976, was appointed to steer the style and textiles division at Ealing Faculty of Increased Training (now the College of West London). Born in Seven Kings, Essex (now a part of the London borough of Redbridge), Nick was the eldest of six kids of John Bullen, a BOAC airline pilot, and his spouse, Mary (nee Hellyer).
