Tesco recalls 'unsafe' soup because of 'presence of metal' – 'do not eat it'

Food recalls are issued due to a health and safety problem. A supermarket or company usually withdraws a product from shelves if there is a risk it might cause harm to an individual.

Tesco is the latest supermarket to recall a product due to it containing pieces of metal.

The company is recalling its Chicken and Vegetable cup soup with croutons.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) published the recall on its website, stating: “The possible presence of small pieces of metal makes this product unsafe to eat.”

The product comes as a five pack and is 110g in size.

It also has a best before date of October 31, 2023.

The FSA’s risk statement said: “This product may contain small pieces of metal which makes it unsafe to eat.”

The organisation also outlined the action taken by the company, saying: “Tesco is recalling the above product and has issued a recall notice to its customers.

“These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.”

In its notice, Tesco said: “We have been made aware that one date ode of Tesco Chicken and Vegetable cup soup with croutons 110g may contain small pieces of metal.”

It added what customers should do, saying: “Please do not eat this product but instead return any affected product to store where a full refund will be given.

“No receipt is required.

“Tesco apologises to our customers for any inconvenience caused.

“For more information contact Tesco Customer Services on 0800 505 555.”

The FSA went on to explain what food recalls are, saying: “If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be ‘withdrawn’ (taken off the shelves) or ‘recalled’ (when customers are asked to return the product).

“The FSA issues Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food.

“In some cases, a ‘Food Alert for Action’ is issued.

“This provides local authorities with details of specific action to be taken on behalf of consumers.”
