UK NCC working to show composites can be recycled and reused – News

The· National Complex Center (NCC) Works with cross-sectoral organizations such as Network Rail, Airbus, Shell, and Gen 2 Carbon to show that composites can be recycled at the end of their lifespan for use in new industry applications. Composite recycling addresses the challenges of composite waste and reduces the environmental impact of advanced materials.

Innovative projects are part of NCC’s core research program.

NCC, the UK’s world-leading composites research center and part of a high-value manufacturing catapult, is demonstrating the recycling of used composites and increasing industry confidence in the subsequent use of non-virgin materials. I am aiming for it. Second Life application.

The project used a pyrolysis process to successfully extract carbon fiber from two Airbus A320 vertical stabilizers that had reached the end of their useful life. Regenerated fibers are processed and constructed in a fabric format that can be used in the process of manufacturing liquid resin composites. The new material combination is evaluated and characterized for its mechanical performance before being used to manufacture wheelchair ramps against the design standards of the railway sector.

The demonstrator will continue to learn from this case study, demonstrating the potential for cross-sectoral applications of end-of-life composites while transferring to other products in sectors such as construction, rail and automotive.

Dr. Enrique Garcia, Chief Technology Officer of the NCC, said: NCC is at the forefront of the use of advanced composites, Work with the industry to anticipate future needs and applications across the sector. The diverse consortia involved in this project highlight the short-term challenges facing many industries and the importance of our efforts to find sustainable solutions for composites that have reached the end of their useful lives. I will. This initiative has successfully developed the technologies needed to overcome these challenges, paving the way for new supply chains for recycled composites, allowing more industries to take advantage of their unique and beneficial properties at low cost. will do so. “

The Core Research Program is a cross-cutting initiative involving NCC member organizations that identifies the biggest challenges facing the industry today and solves them through collaborative research and development.

In partnership with Center for Process Innovation (CPI), NCC is also leading a sustainable composites initiative. Through this program, NCC will work with companies of all sizes to leverage the benefits of composites and applications to create a more sustainable future.
